James C. Farley Foundation
Why we chose this name for our foundation. My husband, David Trent Farley’s father is James C Farley. He moved in with us when he turned 89 years old because he did not feel safe living alone. We had just moved in to our new house 4 months earlier and it was not even finished but we drove to Whittier to pick him up. He only took with him a limited number of personal items and walked away from his house that had been his home for over 53 years.
We did not sell the house right away just in case he changed his mind. As it turned out, we waited three years. Much to our advantage because the housing market tripled. Timing is everything. We sold his house in early August and in mid-August, the house next door to us went up for sale. We could not afford to buy it and we didn’t want to go in to debt, so Jim offered to buy the house for us.
Then my 92-year-old father, Marvin, needed a place to live so we put him up in a studio apartment on our property. We, my husband David and I, got busy remodeling the house “The Annex” with the intent to place both fathers there and hire a full-time live-in care giver and a relief care giver to help care for them and we would rent out the other rooms to seniors that needed affordable housing. It was the perfect idea, we would have help with them next door and we could visit them every day. The problem was we had a hard time finding qualified live-in care givers and relief staff so, the house sat empty. We tried Airbnb but hated it, tried longer term rental and got the wrong target group.
Then I learned about Frank and Sherri, the KatesHouseFoundation.org “Shared Housing” model.
This is why we want to house seniors on a fixed income and Vets.
We have a newly remodeled 4-bedroom 2-bath house, fully furnished, well stocked kitchen with all pots, pans, dishes and more.
